Engage Student Interest with Every Lesson

When students tune out a boring classroom assignment or activity they are only doing what comes naturally to their brains.
— The 12 touchstones of good teaching: a checklist for staying focused every day

In order to engage interest for each student while implementing a lesson Make the Lesson R.I.C.C.H. This acronym stands for:

Re-engage every 10 minutes

Since student’s natural need to learn fades after about 10 minutes, we must re-engage around that time to keep them on the task at hand (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013).

Identify culturally responsive strategies

Addressing the unique needs of a culturally diverse set of students is one of education’s biggest challenges.  Mostly this is due to lack of preparation or training of teachers (Krasnoff, 2016). The inclusion of being mindful of culturally responsive strategies will ensure that the backgrounds of all the students can be attended to in the lesson.

Choose between three to five things

Since providing more than five choices produces less motivational benefits then sticking to three to five (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013), limit the number of choices.

Connect to the real world

When students are provided with a reason for what they are doing in class they become more open to feedback and are more motivated to learn (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013).

Have personal learning goals in mind.

As discussed in item two, student learning goals should be on our mind throughout our lessons.

Just as a do-confirm checklist list should be simple to be effective (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013), this will simplify important concepts to be inserted into a lesson plan.
