About This Toolkit

Technology is an undeniable part of our work as educators.  The use of technology in our schools is no longer optional (Stoeckl, 2016) so as educators we must have a good set of standards around technology and its use.  Teachers are a critical part of redesigning lessons and learning activities to keep up with the fast pace of technology and help students achieve digital age skills (Stoeckl, 2016).

In 2016 the International Society for Technology in Education or ISTE created an updated set of standards surrounding technology.  ISTE is one of the best sources for teaching technology in the classroom (Zook, 2017) and has created twenty nine standards for teachers, students, administrators, computer science teachers and  technology coaches. Check out this video:

This toolkit will focus on the seven standards for students.  According to the International Society for Technology in Education (2019) students should be:

  1. Empowered Learners

  2. Digital Citizens

  3. Knowledge Constructors

  4. Innovative Designers

  5. Computational Thinkers

  6. Creative Communicators

  7. Global Collaborators

In each section of this toolkit you will find the following items for each standard:

  • A brief definition of the meaning of the standard.  Each standard has several sections that will be listed and discussed.

  • Some resources to use in your classroom.

  • Links to various sites and articles to help you.

Culture has a large impact on teachers, students, and the instructional process as a whole.  Teachers then, must be adequately prepared to be culturally responsive to their students and to each other (Krasnoff, 2016).  With this in mind, as well as the seven principles of culturally responsive teaching (Howard, n.d.), this toolkit has been designed to be easily adapted to many students.

Also included in this toolkit is a listing of references used in researching the toolkit itself.
